In a clear demonstration of political leadership, Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé paid an official visit to the headquarters of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) on Tuesday, underscoring the government’s intention to accelerate the country’s return to constitutional order through free and fair elections.
The visit comes amid preparations for a national referendum and general elections—two critical steps in reestablishing the legitimacy of Haiti’s democratic institutions after years of instability. During his meeting with council members, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for effective inter-institutional coordination and the collective responsibility of the state to ensure credible electoral processes.
“The CEP is not alone in this endeavor. The Government is here to provide the necessary support so that every Haitian can vote with dignity and without fear,” Prime Minister Fils-Aimé stated.
This move is part of the broader implementation of the April 3, 2024 Political Agreement, which outlines the national roadmap for Haiti’s transition. The agreement identifies key pillars such as national security, constitutional reform, and inclusive elections to restore the social contract between the state and its citizens.
“Organizing elections is not the job of one institution. It’s a collective national contract—a moral obligation toward future generations,” he added.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the ongoing security concerns but reassured the public that efforts are underway to stabilize vulnerable areas through coordinated action between law enforcement and community-based structures. The government, he said, is fully mobilized to create an environment conducive to voter participation in all parts of the country.
“Our historic responsibility is to rebuild trust in public institutions and return power to the people through the ballot box,” he declared.
Beyond logistics and security, the Prime Minister called for unity and civic engagement. He encouraged political parties, civil society groups, and community leaders to rally around the shared goal of rebuilding a legitimate, functioning democracy.
This visit signals a turning point in Haiti’s democratic transition. By meeting with the CEP, Prime Minister Fils-Aimé not only affirmed the state’s institutional commitment to elections but also sent a message of transparency, resolve, and hope to the Haitian people.
